The itinerary is similar to the standard 3-day tour, just in reverse, but this route is usually more expensive. Tupiza is another starting point for alternative Salar de Uyuni tours. A 2-day tour from Uyuni covers everything included in the 1-day tour. A 1-day tour from Uyuni is the cheapest option to explore Salar de Uyuni. Warm clothes – the altitude is high, and it gets quite cold at night, and below zero in winter months (June to August). If you don’t like rain and prefer dry weather, visit between May and November. On both tours, the food was great, and there was plenty of it — we couldn’t even finish everything. The first night’s accommodation (salt hotel) was very clean and comfortable, with fresh bedsheets, towels, and toilet paper provided. Don’t underestimate the altitude and make sure to acclimatise before taking a tour. Most tours are conducted in 4WD vehicles, with the driver also acting as the guide. I’ve done the 3-day Salar de Uyuni tour twice with different agencies, eight years apart, in 2017 and 2025.

Since the salt flat is already extremely smooth, this water film becomes a near-perfect reflective layer. This is produced by a water layer that sits on top of the salt in the wet season (December to April). It’s also possible to take private tours for the ultimate customised experience.

When these ancient bodies of water evaporated due to time they left behind a thick crust of salt and other minerals and this is what we now call Salar de Uyuni. This spectacular salt flat that covers an area of 10,000 square kilometers is not only the largest in the world, but also one of the most astounding natural marvels in the earth. No special permission is required to enter the Uyuni salt flats. Towel and toiletries – these are not provided in standard tour salt hotels and refuges.

The Dakar monument is made of salt, and the flags were left by travelers during their visits. It’s located near the Argentine border and a bit farther from the Uyuni salt flats. In Uyuni, there are plenty of travel agencies offering Salar de Uyuni tours. Unfortunately, standard 2-day tours don’t include these highlights.

Plenty of travellers opt for the most basic Salar de Uyuni tour and have a fantastic time.
